Soft-Shell Rooftop Tents – Groenberg Fold-Out Tents
A soft-shell rooftop tent – also called a fold-out tent or softcover tent – offers more interior space, more windows and a completely different feeling of space compared to a hard shell. When you open it, the tent fabric unfolds to the side, giving you a full-size sleeping tent on top of your vehicle. Ideal for warm climates, festivals, family trips and anyone who refuses to compromise on sleep quality.
The Groenberg Halvor 160 is our soft-shell rooftop tent for 2–3 people: made from PFAS-free ripstop organic cotton blend (65/35), with a memory foam mattress, five windows and a removable canopy made from recycled ripstop polyester. Sustainably produced – without compromising on comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions – Soft-Shell Rooftop Tents
More answers on mounting, vehicle compatibility and accessories can be found in the Groenberg FAQ.
What is a soft-shell rooftop tent?
A soft-shell rooftop tent – also known as a fold-out tent or softcover tent – consists of a tent fabric on a foldable frame. Unlike a hard shell, opening it unfolds a full tent structure to the side of the vehicle, providing significantly more interior space and headroom. The Groenberg Halvor 160 uses high-quality ripstop organic cotton blend (65/35) – breathable and PFAS-free.
What roof load do I need for a soft-shell rooftop tent?
The Halvor 160 requires a dynamic roof load of at least 71 kg – making it compatible with a particularly wide range of vehicles. You'll find your vehicle's rating in the owner's manual or registration document. Check your vehicle in the Vehicle Guide.
How long does it take to set up a soft-shell rooftop tent?
Setting up the Halvor 160 takes just a few minutes and works solo: unfold the tent, secure the entrance with the bow, fix the windows with spring rods – done. A hard-shell tent opens via gas struts in seconds. If maximum speed matters, consider the Alvar or Tjelvar.
Is the Halvor 160 suitable for rainy weather?
Yes. The removable canopy made from recycled honeycomb ripstop polyester provides a waterproof rating of 2,000 mm and reliably keeps out rain. On fine days it can be removed. For persistently wet conditions we recommend the hard-shell models Alvar or Tjelvar with 8,000 mm waterproof rating and wind resistance up to Beaufort 8.
What does PFAS-free mean for a rooftop tent?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals commonly used in water-repellent coatings – persistent in the environment and harmful to ecosystems. The Halvor 160 uses a PFAS-free DWR coating (level 5) combined with organically grown cotton content. No compromise on weather protection, significantly less environmental impact.
How many people does the Halvor 160 sleep?
The Halvor 160 is designed for 2–3 people – the only Groenberg rooftop tent for three sleepers. Maximum interior load capacity is 300 kg. The memory foam mattress features a washable flannel cover; beneath it a 3D Airmesh mat prevents condensation.
Soft-shell or hard-shell rooftop tent – which is better?
Neither is objectively better – it depends on how you use it. Soft-shell wins on interior space, lower roof load requirements and sustainable materials. Hard-shell (Alvar/Tjelvar) excels with second-fast gas strut setup, a 12 cm closed profile and superior weather resistance up to wind force 8. Warm regions and family touring: Halvor. Year-round camping and fast trips: Alvar or Tjelvar.
Buying a soft-shell rooftop tent – what should I look out for?
