The WEEKEND Roof Tent

10 questions
What is the difference between the WEEKEND Classic and the WEEKEND Comfort?+

Both models are based on the same inflatable Dropstitch platform and are transported inside the car. The Classic (12.5 kg) is the purist base with everything essential. The Comfort (approx. 14.5 kg) additionally offers:

  • SkyView roof – open view of the starry sky
  • Blackout coating – sleep in darkness and cool comfort
  • Rain-protected entrances
  • Additional pockets in the inner roof
How does setting up the WEEKEND work?+

Setup works in three steps:

  • Inflate the Dropstitch platform using the included piston pump (like a SUP board)
  • Assemble the tent on the inflated platform using the aluminium poles
  • Place the finished tent on the car's roof rack and secure it with the straps

One person can do all of this alone, without tools, in just a few minutes.

How large is the WEEKEND when set up?+

The sleeping area is 220 × 130 cm – enough for two people. The interior headroom is approx. 120 cm. When set up on the car, the tent barely exceeds the normal vehicle height.

What are the packed dimensions and where can I store the WEEKEND?+

The packed dimensions are 75 × 48 × 40 cm – barely larger than a travel bag. It fits in home wardrobes, storage rooms or the boot of your car. No garage or carport needed.

Can I use the WEEKEND without a car?+

Yes. With the optional WEEKEND Stage (aluminium platform, approx. 50 cm height, under 9 kg) the tent can be set up on any surface – without a vehicle, without climbing. The Dropstitch platform can also be used separately as an airtrack, guest bed or play mat for children.

Which vehicles is the WEEKEND suitable for?+

Since the WEEKEND is transported in the boot during driving, a roof load of just approx. 10 kg is sufficient – enough for the roof rack. This makes it suitable for almost all vehicles: small cars, electric cars, used cars. It can also be used on rental cars and car-sharing vehicles, as long as a roof rack can be mounted.

Do I need a sleeping mat?+

Not necessarily – the Dropstitch platform is already a stable, level sleeping surface. For optimal sleeping comfort we recommend the Wechsel Vasta 5 sleeping mat, which fits the sleeping area perfectly.

Do I need an electric pump?+

No – a piston pump is included in the delivery. You can additionally use an electric pump or compressor, which speeds up setup further. An electric pump is recommended for older campers or if you set up the tent particularly frequently.

What is included in the WEEKEND delivery?+
  • Inflatable Dropstitch platform (TPU fabric)
  • Tent made of ripstop polyester (UV 50+, 5,000 mm water column)
  • Aluminium poles (16 mm) for tent assembly
  • Piston pump with long hose
  • Extendable aluminium ladder (up to 2.30 m)
  • Repair kit (adhesive patches)
  • Stuff sack bag
  • Assembly instructions
Is the WEEKEND waterproof?+

Yes. The ripstop fabric has a water column of 5,000 mm and reliably protects against rain. The WEEKEND Comfort additionally offers rain-protected entrances. Thanks to its elevated position on the roof, you stay dry even in heavy rain – far from the ground and rising moisture.

Roof tents in general

8 questions
What are the advantages of a roof tent over a ground tent?+
  • Elevated position: Independent of ground conditions, mud, sand, crawling insects
  • Comfort: Firm, level sleeping surface – no inflating, no air loss like with sleeping mats
  • Flexibility: Sleep wherever you're allowed to park
  • Safety: Elevated access gives a greater sense of security, especially when travelling alone
  • View: At best, the starry sky directly above your bed
How fast can I drive with a roof tent?+

With a permanently mounted roof tent, most manufacturers recommend a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Since the WEEKEND is transported in the boot during driving, there is no speed restriction during transport. Please check the relevant legal regulations before travelling abroad.

On which vehicles can I mount a roof tent?+

Basically on any vehicle with a suitable roof rack – with the exception of convertibles. The important thing is that the dynamic roof load is sufficient. You can find this in your vehicle's owner's manual. If in doubt, contact us with the make, model, year of manufacture, roof load and information on whether a roof rail is present.

Where can I find my vehicle's roof load?+

The dynamic roof load is stated in your vehicle's owner's manual – not in the vehicle registration document. Note the distinction: the dynamic roof load applies while driving (the relevant figure for roof tents). The static roof load applies to a stationary vehicle and is much higher. If unclear, the manufacturer or a garage can help. Note: A panoramic roof often reduces the roof load by 20–25 kg.

Are roof tents suitable for children too?+

Yes – children love roof tents! The elevated sleeping feels like a treehouse. Please note: young children should be accompanied when climbing the ladder. With the WEEKEND Stage, the ladder is eliminated entirely – entry is then at a comfortable knee height.

Do Groenberg roof tents have a power connection?+

Our roof tents do not have an integrated power connection. We recommend a power bank or portable battery for charging devices. Exception: The premium models Alvar and Tjelvar feature integrated LED lighting with a USB connection.

Are spare parts available for Groenberg roof tents?+

Yes – selected spare parts are available in our shop. Should something break on a trip, our service team is on hand with advice and spare parts available for short-notice delivery. Simply contact us at info@groenberg.com.

How do I secure my roof tent against theft?+
  • Anti-theft nuts: Special screws that can only be removed with special tools
  • Padlock: Ring-head nut with padlock on the mounting screws
  • GPS tracker: Hidden tracker in the tent as additional security
  • The WEEKEND has a particular advantage: it is transported inside the car and is therefore not at risk of theft while driving.

Softshell & Hardshell

5 questions
What is the difference between a softshell and a hardshell roof tent?+

Softshell (fold-out tent):

  • Significantly lighter than hardshell
  • Sleeping area doubles when unfolded
  • Usually has a covered entrance
  • More affordable in price
  • Setup takes slightly longer, more susceptible to wind

Hardshell:

  • Very fast setup (often under 1 minute)
  • More aerodynamic, quieter while driving
  • Storage space for duvet, pillow, sleeping bag
  • More legal pitching options (tent does not extend beyond the vehicle)
  • Higher weight, higher price
Which roof tent suits me – softshell or hardshell?+

We recommend softshell if you: want a larger sleeping area, have a smaller budget, or don't want to permanently mount the tent on the roof. We recommend hardshell if you: want maximum speed when setting up, drive a lot and value aerodynamics, or want to leave the tent permanently on the vehicle.

Which Groenberg models are softshell, which are hardshell?+

Inflatable (unique category): WEEKEND Classic, WEEKEND Comfort

Softshell: Halvor, Alvar

Hardshell: Tjelvar, Villmark

Are the side walls removable?+

This depends on the model – ranging from non-removable to fully removable. You can find the exact details in the respective product description. This can also be seen from the product photos.

How long is the ladder when fully extended?+

The standard telescopic ladders are 2.3 m long. For particularly tall vehicles (SUVs, vans), an additional 2.6 m ladder is available. The WEEKEND uses the same standard ladder and is therefore perfectly suited to most common car heights.

Roof Load & Vehicles

6 questions
What is the dynamic roof load?+

The dynamic roof load indicates how much weight may be transported on the car roof while driving. It is stated in your vehicle's owner's manual. The total weight of the roof rack (~5–8 kg), tent and any additional luggage must not exceed this value. It differs from the static roof load (applies only to a stationary vehicle and is much higher).

What roof load do I need for each Groenberg model?+
  • WEEKEND Classic / Comfort: min. 10 kg (transported in car, only rack needed)
  • Halvor (68 kg): min. 75 kg roof load
  • Alvar (77 kg): min. 90 kg roof load
  • Tjelvar (81 kg): min. 100 kg roof load

Rule of thumb: tent weight + rack (~7 kg) must not exceed the dynamic roof load.

Can I mount a roof tent on a small car or electric vehicle?+

Yes – the WEEKEND Classic and Comfort are suitable for almost all vehicles since they are transported inside the car. Even small cars (VW Polo, Renault Clio, Opel Corsa) with 75 kg roof load are suitable for the Halvor. Electric cars such as the VW ID.3 or Dacia Spring do not permit roof luggage according to the manufacturer – here only the WEEKEND is suitable, provided a rack can be mounted. The VW ID.4 (75 kg) can also be used with a Halvor.

Does a panoramic roof reduce the roof load?+

Yes, significantly – often by 20–25 kg compared to a standard roof. Some manufacturers do not permit any roof racks with a panoramic roof. Always check the model-specific owner's manual for the relevant trim level.

Can I mount a roof tent on a rental car or car-sharing vehicle?+

The WEEKEND is particularly well-suited for this, as it is very light and mounting is quick and tool-free. Please check with the rental provider in advance whether roof racks and roof tents are permitted. Most rental cars have no roof racks – you would need to acquire a suitable rack separately and fit it accordingly.

Installation & Setup

6 questions
What tools do I need for installation?+

For the WEEKEND no tools are required – installation is completely tool-free. For all other Groenberg models, all necessary tools for attaching to the roof rack are included in the delivery. A ratchet wrench is not strictly necessary but makes installation considerably easier.

Can I install the roof tent on my own?+

The WEEKEND (12.5 kg) is specifically designed for solo installation. One person can carry it alone, set it up on the roof and remove it again – without any help, without tools. For heavier models such as the Halvor, Alvar or Tjelvar we recommend at least two people or a mounting stand.

Which roof racks is the Groenberg WEEKEND compatible with?+

The WEEKEND is equipped with a strap system that fits almost all common roof rack systems (steel and aluminium profiles). Compatible with Thule, Yakima, Kamei and other standard systems. The rack spacing should be between 60 and 120 cm.

How tall can my car be for the WEEKEND?+

The standard ladder is 2.3 m long. It is well-suited for vehicles up to approx. 1.6–1.8 m roof height (including roof rack). For taller vehicles such as SUVs or vans we recommend the optional 2.6 m ladder.

Can I mount a roof tent on vehicles with roof rails?+

Yes – provided you have suitable crossbars that clip into the roof rails. These are available separately and are adapted to the vehicle length. Roof rails alone without crossbars are not sufficient.

Do I need to waterproof the roof tent before first use?+

No – all Groenberg roof tents are factory waterproofed and can be used without any pre-treatment. Should the waterproofing diminish after a few years, we recommend a specialist waterproofing spray for outdoor fabrics – please test on an inconspicuous area first.

Cleaning & Care

5 questions
How do I clean my roof tent properly?+
  • Carefully brush off dried dirt with a soft brush
  • Remove the mattress cover and machine wash at 30° on a gentle cycle
  • Vacuum the tent interior with a handheld vacuum cleaner
  • Clean the tent fabric with mild detergent and a soft sponge
  • Allow to dry completely before packing away
What do I do if mould has formed?+

Light mould can be treated with a water-vinegar mixture (1:1). For stubborn mould we recommend a specialist mould remover for tent fabric. Important: allow the tent to dry completely afterwards and store it open.

Can I pack the tent away when it's wet?+

Briefly yes – in a sudden departure you can pack the tent away wet. However: it must be set up to dry at the latest after 2–3 days. Storing it continuously wet or damp promotes mould growth and damages the fabric.

How do I store my roof tent when not in use?+

The roof tent should be stored dry and not completely sealed – slightly open or with ventilation to prevent mould formation. It must not be under any load during storage. Thanks to its packed dimensions, the WEEKEND fits in any cellar or wardrobe.

Does the WEEKEND's Dropstitch platform require special care?+

The TPU Dropstitch platform is very robust and easy to care for. After use:

  • Rinse with clean water (especially after beach or salt spray use)
  • Allow to dry completely before rolling up
  • Use the small repair kit (included in delivery) for punctures or scratches
  • Do not bring into contact with sharp objects

Accessories & Stage

4 questions
What is the WEEKEND Stage and what do I need it for?+

The WEEKEND Stage is an extendable aluminium platform (192 × 130 cm, approx. 50 cm height, under 9 kg, packed dimensions 76 × 25 × 20 cm). It enables the WEEKEND to be set up without a vehicle – on campsites, in the garden or at festivals. Particularly popular with older campers and people with physical limitations, as entry is at a comfortable seated height – no ladder required.

What is the WEEKEND Bridge?+

The WEEKEND Bridge is a rollable mat with integrated aluminium supports, similar to a slatted frame. It bridges the gap between the roof bars and prevents the Dropstitch platform from sagging under higher loads. Recommended for vehicles with a large spacing between roof bars.

What is the WEEKEND Speedbag?+

The WEEKEND Speedbag is a waterproof transport bag that allows the packed WEEKEND to be transported on the roof rack – keeping the boot free. With a large roll-closure opening and straps for secure fixing on the roof.
